Ernest Doeringsfeld

Ernest  Doeringsfeld  Ernest A. Doeringsfeld, 90, of Urbandale passed away on July 9, 2020 at Brio of Johnston. His daughters were able to be with him during his short illness.

Ernie was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Harry G. and Bessie (Gaskill) Doeringsfeld. He lived in Alden and Hampton while growing up. He received a B.A. degree from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, and an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa. He married Donna Mae Tegen on June 6, 1954 in Strawberry Point, Iowa.

In Belmond Ernie taught math and science for six years followed by twelve years as a high school principal. He then served as the high school principal in Urbandale from 1970 to 1987 and curriculum director in the Adel-DeSoto and Waukee schools until 1992.

Ernie was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a member of the Lions Club for 62 years. He was a member of the Des Moines Area Retired School Personnel Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and was a retired officer of the Iowa Army National Guard.

His wife Donna and an infant son preceded him in death. Survivors include: two daughters, Patricia (James) Solenberg of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Kathleen (Herbert) Miller of Maquoketa, Iowa; sister, Martha (Larry) Smalley of Sumner, Iowa; two granddaughters Kelly (Brendan) Flannery and Amy (Joe) Whitberg both of San Francisco, California; two grandsons Isaac (Nicole) Miller of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Caleb (Ashley) Miller of Blue Grass, Iowa, and great-grandchildren; Abigail, Hannah, Evelyn, Obadiah, Eliana, Thaddeus, Chloe, Josannah, and Katiella.

Ernie loved his family, was a great storyteller, and enjoyed visiting with people of all ages.

Due to COVID-19 safety precautions a memorial service will not be held. Instead a family graveside service will be held at a future date.
