Darla Wahl

Obituaries in Des Moines, IA | The Des Moines Register Darla Grace Wahl, 88, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away peacefully April 20, 2022, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at MDRC at The Bridge in Johnston. Burial will follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.

Darla, daughter of Edgar and Esther (Allie) Miller was born on Mother's Day, May 14, 1933, in rural Stratford, Iowa. She moved to Boone and graduated from Boone Senior High School in 1951.

Upon graduation she worked at Fisher Shoes and later at Priebe Hatchery. On August 3, 1958 she married George Wahl at the First Baptist Church in Boone, IA. They moved to Urbandale in 1960 where they made their home and raised their two daughters, Lisa Ann and Debbie.

Darla spent her life as a wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and devoted daughter. She was a teacher associate at Olmsted Elementary in Urbandale. Darla's life was centered around her faith. She was an active member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church since 1965.

Darla loved to travel with George. Their many adventures covered all 50 states and Canada, including retracing the path they took on their honeymoon. Darla enjoyed researching her family's genealogy, bowling, flower gardening, embroidering, and sewing. Her greatest joy was attending her grandchildren's events seeing band concerts, marching band performances, fashion shows, show choir concerts, dance recitals, volleyball games, and graduations. She was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, George, daughters Lisa (Jeff) Damman and Debbie (Steve) Simpson; grandchildren Monica Simpson, Ryan (Samantha) Damman, Shelby (Derek) Lee, Rachel (Jonathan) McCann, Bailey (Brian) White, and Rebecca Damman; great-grandchildren Statler, Teagan, Harper, George, great-grandson on the way, Morgan; and brother in law James (Barbara) Wahl. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister in law, Joanne Wahl.

The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Monday at Iles Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to MDRC at The Bridge. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
